Penn State football head coach Matt Campbell says the exact opposite of what the entire fan base is feeling after loss to Wisconsin
The Penn State Nittany Lions lost to Wisconsin at home, and Matt Campbell’s QB Rocco Becht did not perform well in the clutch.
The Penn State Nittany Lions just blew a 17-point lead at home. This loss is the first of the Matt Campbell era at Penn State. It’s also the first loss that’s simply inexcusable.
Usually we talk about losses as if the other team was just better. Not this time—Penn State was better, but shot themselves in the foot time and time again. And late in the game, the offense just didn’t play well. They collapsed, and so did their quarterback, Rocco Becht. If you ask the fans how he played, they’d say terrible simply because of the fourth quarter and various other plays. If you asked Campbell, he would say something completely different.

“Felt like some of our issues were more so with protection things … I really thought Rocco played a good football game for the most part. I thought Rocco made some tremendous plays. I thought he kept us in the football game,” Campbell told reporters after the game.
Usually I would say don’t completely read into the box score. But, in this case, read all the way into it. Becht went 12/29, with 114 passing yards and an interception. He was not good one bit. And he would be the first player to tell you that.
“I’ve gotta be better for this offense, I’ve gotta be better for this team,” Becht told reporters after the game. “We have a lot of talent on this team… It just wasn’t our day. … It’s on me to spread the ball around and make the defense guess.”
Of course Campbell isn’t going to go out there to the media and tell everyone that Becht sucks. But you can keep it real. Just say, “Look, he’s got to be better, but so does everyone, including myself.” And then you can leave it at that. The fans aren’t taking you lying about the QB’s play well. Because, let’s face it, he looked awful.
