The Texas A&M Aggies and their top-ranked 2027 recruiting class took a hit Thursday when five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson committed to South Carolina.

The Aggies, along with the Michigan Wolverines, were considered serious contenders for the No. 6 overall recruit in the cycle, but the Gamecocks pulled away with the prize.

Dobson, a 6’1, 185-pound corner out of North Carolina, carries a 97.31 composite rating on Rivals Industry. He’s the No. 2 cornerback in the country and the No. 1 player in the state of North Carolina. His NIL valuation is $362 thousand, and scouts have compared him to CJ Henderson, a former first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“All glory to God and Gamecocks, let’s go,” Dobson said when he announced his commitment.

South Carolina had the edge in the visit battle

Auburn, Clemson, and Michigan were also involved in the race for Dobson. However, South Carolina separated itself in a critical area. The Gamecocks logged nine visits with Dobson compared to Texas A&M’s four. That gap in face time proved significant. South Carolina’s proximity to Dobson gave them a natural advantage the Aggies couldn’t overcome from College Station.

The only thing keeping Texas A&M in the fight was the momentum surrounding its 2027 recruiting class. It still remains the best class in the country. That kind of gravity matters to recruits who want to play alongside elite talent. But, it wasn’t enough to close the distance in this particular recruitment.

The Aggies are still in great shape for 2027

Despite missing on Dobson, Texas A&M’s 2027 class is loaded. The Aggies still have six five-star commits and 10 four-stars. That includes five-star cornerback Raylaun Henry, who is considered the fourth-best cornerback in the country. Losing Dobson stings, but it doesn’t create a hole at the position.

Coach Mike Elko and his staff have recruited at an elite level throughout this cycle, and one missed target won’t slow that down. Texas A&M has built the kind of class that absorbs a loss like this without losing its standing atop the national rankings.
