When you have one of the best wide receivers in the NFL like the Minnesota Vikings do in Justin Jefferson, you’d love for him to have consistency at the quarterback position.

For the first three and a half years of his career, Jefferson that with Kirk Cousins. Once he tore his Achilles tendon, it hasn’t been that way. Eight quarterbacks have started for the Vikings since the start of the 2023 season, and, barring injury, Kyler Murray will be the ninth on September 13th.

With Murray coming into the fold, it will give the Vikings a quarterback who has peaked high with the Arizona Cardinals paired with a level of athleticism they haven’t had as a starter in ages.

How does Jefferson feel about Murray? He spoke to The Athletic’s Mike Silver and highlighted one key area: athleticism.

“What excites me is his ability to just be an athlete,” Jefferson said. “Everybody knows what he does when the ball is in his hands, running the ball and being able to create time back there in the pocket. When a play might be dead, he’s able to kind of move with his feet and make something happen. So, you’re always alive, and you’re always just expecting that the ball is going to come your way.

“But his throwing ability is also something that has really, really surprised me. While he was in Arizona, I didn’t really keep track and pay attention to his arm talent. And seeing the different type of throws he’s making, where he’s throwing the ball, it’s been really, really surprising me.”

The athleticism aspect is something the Vikings could really benefit from. There hasn’t been a quarterback with the skill set of Murray in this offense since Robert Griffin III played for the Washington Commanders in 2012. It creates a unique element for head coach Kevin O’Connell to utilize.

Plus, the ability to create outside of structure for both quarterback and receiver is something they haven’t had the last four years, or the last six if you include Jefferson’s first two years.

It’s great that Jefferson is excited about what Murray can offer, and it’s even more compelling to see what this can be.
