The Eagles’ latest offensive collapse exposes a Jalen Hurts problem Philadelphia can no longer explain away
The Philadelphia Eagles had the perfect formula to beat the Los Angeles Rams at home. What does another collapse say about this offense?
The Philadelphia Eagles offense hit a new low against the Los Angeles Rams.
After halftime, the Eagles produced three punts and three turnovers on downs. They also let 38-year-old quarterback Matthew Stafford follow 38-year-old Case Keenum as the latest veteran passer to beat them in back-to-back weeks.
Heading into this matchup, one thing was very clear. Philadelphia’s best path to a win was to make the game ugly and give quarterback Jalen Hurts a chance to close it out. That is exactly what happened. The Eagles still found a way to lose.
The Eagles had the formula and still blew it
The Rams did plenty to give this game away. Stafford threw two interceptions. The Eagles deserve credit for making those plays, but both came on wildly inaccurate passes. Los Angeles also missed a field goal, and the miscues kept piling up.
With eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Philadelphia led 20-10 and had first-and-goal with a chance to put the game away. Instead, the drive stalled. On fourth-and-goal, guard Cam Jurgens bumped into Hurts in an awkward sequence, and the Eagles came away empty.
That was the moment the game turned. The Rams did not bring their A, B, or C game, and Philadelphia still could not finish the job at home.
The numbers behind an atrocious offensive day
Hurts has a reputation for making clutch plays in big moments. That version of him never showed up. He went 2-of-9 passing for 10 yards in the second half, which works out to 1.1 yards per attempt.
The third-down numbers were even worse. Philadelphia went 0-for-12 on third downs. That is not a typo.
The most damning part of the performance came from the field position the Eagles were handed. Of their 20 points, 17 came on drives with an average starting point at the Rams’ 26-yard line. Stafford kept giving Philadelphia short fields because of the turnovers, and the offense still could not sustain anything.
Hurts finished with fewer than half of his 27 pass attempts completed. Simply put, it was an atrocious day.
Context matters, but it only goes so far
There is real context here.
Right tackle Lane Johnson did not play because of a personal issue, and the Eagles have historically struggled without him in the lineup. Running back Saquon Barkley hurt his hamstring during the game. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith did not play either. The offensive line has also been in flux all season.
Some people will throw this game out because of the injuries and the bad weather. I understand that argument. I also do not like writing off a new situation after just a month of football, because teams tend to settle in as the season goes on.
Here’s the thing, though. We do this song and dance with Philadelphia every year. A new offensive coordinator arrives, and the promise is that Sean Mannion will change things, build the offense around Hurts, and spark real growth as a passer.
Hurts is in his seventh season. At this point, he is who he is. When everything around him is great, he is a very good quarterback. When things break down, his deficiencies show up on a week-to-week basis.
There is also a reason several of the big-name offensive coordinators on the market this past offseason did not want to come to Philadelphia.
The Eagles are running out of runway
This loss does not exist in a vacuum. Philadelphia barely got past the Tennessee Titans.
Then the Eagles lost to a Chicago Bears team led by Keenum, a 38-year-old third-string quarterback. Now they have dropped a winnable home game against a Rams team that handed them every opportunity.
If you ask me, this offense is not getting better. I believe this is a very real problem, and I think the Eagles are going to miss the playoffs this season.
Philadelphia is going to run out of runway to get off the ground in time to be a real playoff team. What that means for Hurts, head coach Nick Sirianni, and an entire franchise that always operates in a pressure cooker remains to be seen. It is hard to feel good about where things are heading.
