Dan Quinn delivers concerning Marcus Mariota injury update that leaves Commanders stuck in quarterback limbo
Washington’s quarterback room took another hit in London, and the questions now stretch from Jayden Daniels all the way down to the third-stringer.
Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn clarified the Marcus Mariota injury in Sunday’s postgame press conference in London. Quinn opened by saying he was gutted for Marcus Mariota and thought he was starting very strong.
Quinn then added the detail that matters most for the Commanders’ quarterback room. The team believes it’s an MCL injury, and he will have more updates after a scan is completed.
Washington’s triple limbo at quarterback
This leaves Washington in triple limbo. Let’s take a look at the three questions hanging over the most important position on the roster.
Firstly, everything still runs through Jayden Daniels & his potential return as the starting quarterback. The Commanders are waiting on him before anything else. Every week he’s off the field, the depth behind him gets tested a little harder, & London tested it hard.
Second, Washington is waiting to see how severe Mariota’s injury is. If the lean is MCL, you have to expect that it’s somewhat significant. The scan will tell the real story, but nobody should be planning on a quick turnaround until the team says otherwise.
Thirdly, there’s the question of whether Athan Kaliakmanis will remain the backup quarterback in Washington. He wasn’t supposed to be the guy taking meaningful snaps in a game like this. Now he might be the guy the whole season leans on, at least for a stretch.
That’s three layers of uncertainty at one position. For a team that wants to be taken seriously in a loaded NFC, that’s a rough spot to be in.
Injuries pile up beyond the quarterback room
Mariota wasn’t the only name on Quinn’s list. The coach also confirmed that Charles Omenihu hurt his groin.
“Same thing. We’ll find out more tomorrow as we’re going,” Quinn said.
Quinn also confirmed that wide receiver Jaylin Lane had a serious ankle injury. Remember, the Commanders were already without WR Terry McLaurin due to a hamstring injury.
What comes next for the Commanders
More injury updates are expected early this week. The Mariota scan is the big one. The answer there decides whether Kaliakmanis is a spot starter or the man under center for the foreseeable future.
Until then, Washington sits in a holding pattern. Daniels is the ceiling. Mariota was the safety net. Kaliakmanis is now the plan nobody wanted to need.
Stay patient & wait on the scan. Then we’ll know exactly how deep this hole is.
