Latest NFL Draft news shows that Giants could steal Commanders’ top first-round pick target before No. 7 overall pick
The Washington Commanders may have to pivot when they’re on the clock at No. 7 overall after the New York Giants steal who they want the most, which is growing likely according to Adam Schefter.
The 2026 NFL Draft is just one week away, and the rumors and smoke surrounding the Washington Commanders are growing stronger.
This is the time where team’s plans start to surface before the draft, and this will be one of the most unpredictable drafts in recent history. The first six picks will dictate the entire draft approach for the Washington Commanders, and they could have to pivot.
One NFL insider says the New York Giants are growing likely to take one of the Commanders’ top targets before they’re on the clock at No. 7 overall.
Adam Schefter links the Giants to two of the Commanders’ top first-round targets
The Giants are a massive wildcard team in the draft, and what they do at No. 5 overall will be a domino effect for the first round, especially for the Washington Commanders. NFL insider Adam Schefter has been vocal about what he’s heard the Giants will do, and it involves taking a top player on the Commanders’ board.
“This is the first draft pick for the new New York Giants head coach, John Harbaugh. He’ll be looking for somebody to establish a culture to represent the values that he does, and that’s why it’s such an important pick for this team. And there are a lot of directions they can go. A lot of people wonder whether they would roll the dice on Jeremiyah Love, who many consider to be the best player in this draft, or whether they would go a more traditional route and stick with the defensive side of the football, where they could really use some help. Sonny Styles, linebacker, Ohio State. Caleb Downs, safety, Ohio State. A lot of people around the league think that the Giants’ first pick could come out of Columbus, Ohio.”
Schefter went on to say on his podcast that he thinks the Giants take either Caleb Downs or Sonny Styles, and doesn’t see Jeremiyah Love in the mix. Styles and Downs are easily the two top players on the Washington Commanders’ board, so they’d have to pivot.
It’s also heavily rumored that the Dallas Cowboys want to trade up for Styles, which could really put the Commanders in a bad position. This would force them to pivot, and possibly have one player fall to them.
Who the Washington Commanders should target if Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs are gone
Missing on the top two defensive players in the draft wouldn’t be ideal for the Commanders, but it may help one player fall to them. It all depends on what the Tennessee Titans do with the No. 4 overall pick, but if they take a defensive player, then RB Jeremiyah Love could fall to No. 7 overall.
Love falling to the Commanders might be the best-case scenario, even if RB isn’t the biggest need. There’s a strong argument that Love is the best player in the NFL Draft, regardless of positional value. Jayden Daniels and Love would be one of the best backfields in the NFL, and take the offense over the top.
