Latest NFL report leaves door wide open for Commanders to land All-Pro in free agency even after splash signing
The Commanders may not be done adding to a premium position after latest NFL report shows an All-Pro’s market wasn’t what it was expected to be.
The Washington Commanders have lucked out several times by coming in second place for top free agents this offseason, but there’s one they could actually luck into.
The free agency market has been heavily inflated this offseason, and even then, the Commanders have been willing to pay for top players. They gave free agent EDGE Odafe Oweh a four-year, $100 million contract, and they’re likely not finished at the position.
The latest NFL report shows that the door is still open on them pursuing All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is still looking for a new home.
Commanders could pursue Trey Hendrickson after his latest market update
Hendrickson was the top free agent heading into the offseason, and we expected him to find a new home quickly, but that’s not how things turned out. The Dallas Cowboys were expected to be the favorite to sign him, but they traded for Rashan Gary, though they still could sign him.
Things have been quiet, but NFL insider Jonathan Jones says that Hendrickson’s market doesn’t line up with what he’s asking for. Hendrickson will have to lower his price with some teams reporting a $10 million difference, which favors the Commanders, who have been willing to pay big money to whom they want.
Yes, the Commanders signed Oweh to a contract that pays him $25 million per year, but that will look like nothing after next offseason. Oweh wasn’t the only highly paid pass rusher, as the Carolina Panthers gave Jaelan Phillips a four-year, $120 million contract. Hendrickson is projected to make $22 million per year after a down season, but he’s probably looking for closer to $30 million per year.
The Commanders have plenty of money to spend, and they still need to add to the EDGE room with questions around Dorance Armstrong’s ACL injury and a lack of bodies in the room.
The Commanders have the most salary cap space to spend
The one positive to missing on big-name free agents is that you still have a lot of money to spend, and Over The Cap shows that the Commanders currently have the most salary cap remaining. Their site shows that the Commanders have an estimated $79.8 million left of salary cap space remaining.

The Commanders said they want to address the EDGE position, and they really can if they add Hendrickson in addition to Oweh. They still only have five EDGE players on the roster, with one being Armstrong, and none of the other are starter-quality players.
This would also leave their options with the No. 7 overall pick wide open to draft Jeremiyah Love, Carnell Tate, Sonny Styles, or Caleb Downs instead of a risky pass rusher. The Commanders have been aggressive, and Hendrickson’s situation favors Washington more than any other team right now.
