Ohio State HC Ryan Day’s admission after the spring transfer portal closed shows just how crazy the college football landscape can be

The spring transfer portal window closed on Friday night when it hit midnight and it put a bow on 10 days straight of players looking to transfer schools.
For the Ohio State Buckeyes, things went well overall. Walk-on players RB TC Caffey, WR Reis Stockdale, and punter Anthony Venneri were the departures for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State added one of the tip transfers DE Beau Atkinson from North Carolina as well as OT Justin Terry from West Virginia. With the portal being closed, head coach Ryan Day admitted it was a relief.
“I woke up with a little bit of a headache because it was a long night last night. That first beer went down cold after the portal finally closed at midnight, I can tell you that,” Day said, via Eleven Warriors. “Holy smokes, what a world we're living in right now.”
Ohio State has a strong culture and the Buckeyes don’t often lose key players to the portal. Still, you have to fight to keep your own players every time the portal opens. When players transfer out of Ohio State, it is typically to get more playing time elsewhere. That is just a testament to the culture that Day has built and carried on.
The Buckeyes are aggressive in the winter portal depending on their needs. Ohio State loaded up a year ago with S Caleb Downs, RB Quinshon Judkins, QB Will Howard, and C Seth McLaughlin. Ohio State was a bit less aggressive this past winter portal with TE Max Klare, OT Phillip Daniels, and OT Ethan Onianwa joining the team.
With the portal now closed, the Buckeye know the team they’re going to have for the 2025 season. That is a relief for Day and his staff.
