Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers have struggled this offseason on the recruiting trail. Auburn fans who pay close attention to recruiting might say that's the understatement of the year–the Tigers currently rank 70th in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings for the 2026 class.

The good news?

Auburn looks like they might just be locking up a five star wide receiver recruit here to kick off the month of August.

Jase Mathews, elite WR recruit predicted to commit to Auburn

Jase Mathews, a fast-rising elite wide receiver recruit from the state of Mississippi, recently announced his commitment date (August 8th). He'll be choosing between Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M–a bevy of SEC powers.

Mathews wasn't a heavily recruited wide receiver until just the last year or so as he's continued to develop physically, dominating the competition with elite production last year. Auburn got their offer in ahead of Texas A&M and LSU while he was still breaking out in a big way last November. Ole Miss, on the other hand, offered Mathews over two years ago.

However, despite the in-state interest from Lane Kiffin and the Rebels, and with less than two weeks until his commitment expert predictions are starting to come in suggesting that Mathews may be choosing Auburn.

Rivals insider Jeffrey Lee was one of the first, but others are starting to echo that sentiment. This should be music to Auburn fans' ears–and their true freshman five star quarterback Deuce Knight.

Knight just reached out quite publicly on Sunday via X saying, "Let's do it [Jase Mathews]." He's clearly all in on Jase Mathews joining the the fold here soon.

Auburn doesn't exactly have a huge need at wide receiver for 2025 given they already have stud rising sophomore Cam Coleman, top transfer talent Eric Singleton, and a handful of other key contributors. However, Singleton is likely to depart for the NFL Draft after this season. Auburn could use a speedster with wild ball skills like Mathews to make some plays opposite Coleman in 2026.

Hopefully Hugh Freeze and close the deal here soon. If so that could really spark some much-needed recruiting momentum heading into the 2025 season. Auburn started winning some battles in July. That needs to continue ramping up in August if the Tigers want to have a decent 2026 recruiting class put together by next spring.
