Seminoles coach has powerful message about his team moving forward in 2025 despite likely being out of CFP race
The Florida State Seminoles cannot give up. There’s still a ton of football left in the 2025 season.
The Florida State Seminoles may be out of the College Football Playoff race by now with four losses, but there is still plenty to play for if you’re a Seminoles player. Not only are you playing for yourself, you’re also playing for your head coach – Mike Norvell – who is on the hot seat as we speak.
Defensive backs coach Pat Surtain described it perfectly regarding his team and why he knows they still won’t quit. There’s still a ton of football left to be played.
Seminoles’ Pat Surtain knows his team won’t give up
“A lot of these guys’ lasting goals are to get to the NFL,” Surtain told reporters earlier this week. “You never want to put bad stuff on film. So it’s self-motivation and pride in playing for Florida State—a prestigious university—and the will to go out and compete. We’ve got guys who have that in mind. I know this team won’t quit. They’re going to keep fighting, and we’ve just got to find a way to win one and go from there.”
The Noles still have an easy enough schedule remaining that they could win out the rest of the year. Wake Forrest is 5-2 on the year, but doesn’t have the strength of roster that Florida State has. However, we have seen several times that obviously doesn’t matter – see Virginia, Pitt, and Stanford.
Wake Forrest’s defensive stats in 2025
- Opponent Points Allowed: 132 total points across 7 games, averaging 18.9 points per game.
- Total Defense (Yards): Held SMU to 246 yards of total offense.
- Third-Down Defense: Limited SMU to 4/17 on third-down conversions (23.5%).
Clemson is next, and they have the same record as the Noles, with their head coach also on the hot seat. The only thing with that game is it’s in Death Valley. The Noles then host Virginia Tech, who fired their head coach earlier this season, before playing NC State and the Florida Gators.
All of these games are very winnable. They could finish the season 8-4 and win out, but the coaching and the play on the field have to be better. We have seen this team beat the Alabama Crimson Tide, who right now look like one of the best teams in the entire country. If they play that way against all these teams, there is no stopping them. Then, the Seminoles will have learned how to win games, so going into next year, with the good recruiting classes they have, it won’t be foreign.
This team won’t quit.
