Jon Sumrall gets the last laugh as the Florida Gators hand the LSU Tigers a loss shortly after they landed Lane Kiffin
Jon Sumrall scores a massive win over Lane Kiffin by getting four-star safety Dylan Purter flipping from LSU to Florida.
The Florida Gators had themselves a really good beginning to the early signing period. Head coach Jon Sumrall signed 15 of the 19 commits that Billy Napier secured before he was fired.
Four recruits were remaining: four-star running back Carsyn Baker had decommitted earlier in the week and is projected to go to the Texas A&M Aggies, four-star cornerback C.J. Hester is likely to sign on Thursday or Friday, three-star tight end Kekua Aumua is deciding between the Gators, Washington Huskies, and Auburn Tigers, and four-star safety Kaiden Hall is likely to sign on Friday.
If the Gators, for some reason, missed out on Hall, they got a great insurance policy on Thursday morning.
Jon Sumrall secures big win over Lane Kiffin
Once Sumrall took the job in Gainesville, there were a couple of intriguing recruits who he could flip to the Gators. One of them ended up committing to the Gators in four-star safety Dylan Purter.
It’s a big win for the Gators to get Purter in the fold, and he’s someone who has visited Sumrall at Tulane a couple of times. He is the 151st-ranked player in the country and the 15th-ranked safety per the Rivals Industry Ranking.
“He hit me up the day he got hired,” Dylan Purter told Gators Online earlier this week. “I think he got hired on a Sunday, and he was calling me that night. He told me that he really wanted me at Tulane, and he still wants me at Florida. It’s a good spot for him, and he said he wants me to come with him. So I’m flipping.”
That kind of passion and recruiting cache is something that will serve the Gators really well over the next however many years he holds the position. Plus, it’s always nice to get one over on Lane Kiffin after he was the top candidate to land the job for weeks.
Recruiting already feels better than it did under Napier, and that should be very exciting for Gators fans.
