Penn State’s wild head coaching search could finally be coming to an end with a new focal candidate being revealed.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea, you probably have been following the Penn State Nittany Lions’ ongoing head coaching search too closely.
With so many different candidates at one point rumored to be the school’s ideal hire to replace James Franklin, the school is likely ready for this rollercoaster of a hiring process to come to an end. Thankfully, it just might be approaching the end. On3 Sports has reported that Penn State has shifted the focus of its head coaching search to current Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell.

Campbell is finishing up his 10th season as the head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones. He has a 72-55 record with the school and has led them to seven or more wins in all but two seasons. Before joining Iowa State, Campbell was the head coach of Toledo from 2011 to 2015, where he finished with a 35-15 record, including three seasons with nine wins.
When a coaching cycle takes multiple twists and turns, as Penn State’s did, the result is typically less than ideal. However, if Penn State can land Campbell, I think this should be viewed as a win for the school. Over the years, multiple schools have been rumored to attempt to pry him away from Iowa State, but without success. He’s also very respected inside NFL buildings and has reportedly interviewed for jobs at that level multiple times. On paper, he is a fantastic candidate who could ultimately be very successful, given Penn State’s resources.
