A former Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver and one time No. 1 wideout in the country was sentenced to jail time in Pennsylvania to start the week. 

Julian Fleming was sentenced on Monday to 9 to 23 months stemming from a fatal ATV crash that killed his girlfriend, 23-year-old Alyssa Boyd, last May in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, according to WBNS-10TV.

Fleming, a former 5-star recruit who spent four years with the Buckeyes before transferring to Penn State, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence. He will serve six months of probation upon release.

Details of the crash and charges

Reports say Fleming was driving an ATV last May when it struck a deer that had jumped onto Painter Lick Lane in Bradford County. Fleming sustained serious injuries in the crash, and Boyd was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fleming was originally charged with homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, and aggravated assault. Monday’s sentencing reflected the reduced conviction of involuntary manslaughter and DUI.

Fleming’s time at Ohio State

Fleming arrived in Columbus as the No. 1 wide receiver and a 5-star prospect in the class of 2020. He played in 38 games over four seasons from 2020 to 2023 but never lived up to the billing he carried out of high school. Fleming finished his Ohio State career with 963 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

His best season came in 2022 when he caught 34 passes for 533 yards and six touchdowns. The development wasn’t quite there under wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, and Fleming eventually made the decision to return home to Pennsylvania.

Final college season at Penn State

Fleming transferred to Penn State for his final college season and played in 16 games for the Nittany Lions. He caught 14 passes for 176 receiving yards and a touchdown to close out his college playing career.
