Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow was asked about the Jayden Daniels/DJ Pickett number drama following the Cincinnati Bengals’ preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday.
Burrow told reporters that he doesn’t know enough about the situation while revealing that he’s been told that No. 9 won’t be used again at LSU.
“I just heard about it a couple hours ago,” said Burrow. “I don’t necessarily have too many thoughts at this time. I don’t know enough about the situation to have any thoughts.”
“They told me that they wouldn’t use it again, but you never know what happens,” added Burrow when asked about the No. 9 he wore at LSU.
Some fans and analysts have tried to frame this situation as a Daniels vs Burrow thing, but that’s not the case.
TigerBait.com’s Preston Guy reported on Thursday evening that “Daniels remains close with Burrow and Pickett and is not upset with them at all.
“Daniels’ frustration is strictly directed at LSU’s communication with all parties involved,” wrote Guy.
Ultimately, teams can only withhold so many numbers. There are too many players on a college football roster to make retiring a bunch of numbers a viable option for any college football program.
Miami may have found the best solution for current players wearing numbers that fans believe should be retired.
