Jon Sumrall names starting quarterback for the Florida Gators and it’s about time
The Florida Gators finally have their starting quarterback going into Week 1 against the Florida Atlantic Owls.
One of the highest-profile quarterback competitions has been in Gainesville with the Florida Gators. Head coach Jon Sumrall has named a starting quarterback, and it will be Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets transfer Aaron Philo.
“We are moving forward with the quarterback situation,” said Sumrall during a Monday morning press conference. “Aaron Philo is gonna go with the ones more than anyone…as we prepare for game one, Aaron Philo, we are preparing for him to be the starter for week one.”

It’s the expected outcome for the Gators, as Philo was the highest profile transfer coming in at the position. He and Tramell Jones Jr., who won the backup job behind DJ Lagway as a true freshman, were competing for the job, but it’s notetworthy how Sumrall framed this.
Philo is going to be the starter for Week 1 against the Florida Atlantic Owls, but he did leave the door open for Jones to potentially start down the road. The first couple of games will be a really nice barometer for Philo to get his bearings down, as it’s a G6 opponent in the Owls and the face Campbell of the FCS in Week 2.
The Week 3 matchup against the Auburn Tigers on the road will be a huge litmus test for the offense. The Gators brought in offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech to run the offense, and it’s a system that Philo is very comfortable with. In his limited playing time last year, he looked good operating it.
Philo is going to be an A+ point guard of the offense, as someone who operates well on schedule. With the vast amount of skill position players the Gators have in running back Jadan Baugh and the incredible wide receivers, that’s all they need.
Will that be how things get maximized? Only time will tell, and Philo being the guy will be fun to watch.
