Former LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu took part in the Tiger Walk before last Saturday’s game against Louisiana Tech.

It was the first time that Mathieu has taken part in the Tiger Walk since his final season at LSU (2011).

Mathieu sent LSU head coach Lane Kiffin a text after the game to tell him thank you for the experience.

And to Mathieu’s surprise, Kiffin immediately texted back.

“That whole weekend was amazing,” said Mathieu. “I had texted Lane after the game, which is cool, too, because a lot of coaches, you text them, and they’ll get back with you three months later. Lane has always got that phone in his hand. I don’t know if he’s texting or if it’s his son texting or his assistants, but he always replies.

“But I had to tell him thank you for that experience. I never quite had that experience. He’s done a great job of just kind of rolling out the red carpet. And outside of just the performance on the field, I think he kind of understands what it takes to build a fan base.”

There’s no doubt that Kiffin is connecting well with the LSU fan base — certainly better than Brian Kelly ever did. Kiffin understands what LSU fans value, and he’s making sure to lean into those things.
