Former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey delivered a statement performance this past weekend, leading the Kentucky Wildcats into College Station and defeating the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies by a score of 31-21.

Minchey was tremendous for head coach Will Stein’s offense, completing 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards and two touchdown passes against zero interceptions. He outplayed Aggie signal caller Marcel Reed and proved to be a huge reason why Kentucky came away with a massive upset victory.

For Notre Dame fans, it was a feel-good moment to appreciate a beloved member of the Fighting Irish program over the last three seasons.

Minchey was involved in a quarterback battle with CJ Carr last offseason, and many thought he may end up winning out as head coach Marcus Freeman’s and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s starting signal caller. Things didn’t go his way, but Minchey never hung his head. He served as the primary backup to Carr a year ago and never once complained along the way.

What the upset means for Kaden Henderson’s recruitment

Outside of the obvious feel-good storyline, this result carries real recruiting implications for Notre Dame as the Fighting Irish continue to try to flip Texas A&M five-star 2027 linebacker commit Kaden Henderson.

Notre Dame seemed to have a lot of momentum heading into Henderson’s commitment on June 18, but the Aggies and head coach Mike Elko won out due to a strong NIL offer and some negative recruiting pointed at the Notre Dame program. Even though the Irish technically lost out for Henderson, that has not stopped them from pursuing the talented linebacker over the last several months.

The Tampa Bay (Fla.) Jesuit High School standout is currently rated on the 247 Sports Composite ranking as the No. 24 overall player, the No. 1 linebacker, and the No. 4 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class. He currently sits as a five-star player.

A long list of impressive programs have pushed hard for Henderson both before and after his commitment to the Aggies.

Henderson’s impressive production

During his junior season for Tampa Bay Jesuit, despite missing five games due to injury, Henderson put together a tremendous season. He totaled 49 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 20 quarterback hurries, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

So far during his senior season in 2026, the 6-foot-1.5, 218-pound linebacker is building on that production. In four games, he has recorded 34 total tackles (a team lead), including six tackles for loss, five sacks, four quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, and a fumble recovery.

Can Notre Dame make the flip happen?

From a pure talent perspective, Henderson is one of the very best overall players in the 2027 class and has been receptive to Notre Dame even after committing to the Aggies several months ago. If the Irish are able to stack strong performances on the field and Texas A&M falters another time or two, this recruitment could get very interesting.

For now, Henderson continues to answer the phone when Notre Dame calls.

How things go for the rest of the season could be a huge determinant of Notre Dame’s actual chances to make the flip happen in the end. It would be a fun story if that momentum started to really tick upward due to an upset victory from former Notre Dame signal caller Kenny Minchey.
