Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has done a fantastic job recruiting since getting to Gainesville. After keeping Billy Napier’s recruiting class mostly intact, the Gators currently have the No. 8 class in the country, led by No. 2 overall recruit, offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller.

On Saturday, the Gators hosted multiple recruits when they faced the Ole Miss Rebels, and they were treated to a 52-28 blowout. It’s the most points the Gators have scored against a top-five team since they beat Florida State for the national championship in 1996.

Florida Gators make a major impression on Easton Royal

Arguably the biggest visitor on Saturday was five-star wide receiver Easton Royal. He is currently committed to the Texas Longhorns, but has been entertaining both the Gators and LSU Tigers since committing last fall. This was Royal’s third visit to Gainesville, but his first when it was gameday.

Needless to say, like it does for everyone, it made a very good impression on Royal. He spoke with Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman about his visit to Gainesville, including saying that he could “100%” see himself in Gainesville.

“We had a lot of fun. It was great. You know it was my first-ever game day down in Gainesville, so it was definitely better than what I expected,” Royal told Rivals on Sunday morning. “You know, it’s definitely, up there with LSU’s just from how loud it was, how engaged the fans were, and just you could tell Ole Miss was struggling at times to hear because I couldn’t even hear sometimes. So that’s just how loud it was.”

This is a massive deal for the Gators, and it could be influential in his recruitment. It felt like the Gators were out of contention in July when Royal received an expert prediction to flip to LSU, but getting him on campus was a win in itself. On August 6th, I wrote this about Royal potentially committing to the Gators, and it still holds true.

“Having Royal back on campus will be huge for the Gators as they look to land one of the top recruits in the class of 2027. It will still be an uphill battle, but Royal has described his relationship with Sumrall as the strongest thus far during his recruitment. That’s the likely reason why the Gators are in the position they are with Royal.

Can they turn the corner and get him to commit? It’s certainly possible, as the gameday atmosphere is significantly different than it is during the summer. Will it happen? Probably not, especially since Royal is also attending the Longhorns heading to Death Valley to face LSU.”

The relationship with Sumrall is a huge factor in the entire discussion. Royal committed the day before Sumrall took the job at Florida, and committing to a gameday visit is a huge deal. The one thing that could be a deciding factor is visiting LSU when they host Texas in November.

It’s huge for the Gators to get this kind of reaction from a player like Royal, and the hope is that it could change his recruitment. Imagine getting Royal added to a top-10 recruiting class in Sumrall’s first year.
