Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart kept it all the way real regarding their win over Oklahoma Sooners
The Oklahoma Sooners lost 41-13, and they beat themselves more than Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs beat them.
The Oklahoma Sooners are now 2-2, and things couldn’t feel worse. This team may win just a few more games, if that. The loss to Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs certainly rubs salt in the wound.
Georgia is a very good football team. Oklahoma is not. Even so, the Sooners had a chance to make this a football game. They squandered that opportunity. Even Smart knows that things could have been very different.
“The big time play of the game is the punch-out. There are forced turnovers, and there are gifts,” Smart told the media after the game. “We like to have the saying ‘Dawgs don’t beat the Dawgs’. The Dawgs didn’t beat the Dawgs today.
“But the Sooners, in a lot of ways, beat the Sooners. They gifted us multiple turnovers that could have been touchdowns, and the game would have been different. So, opportunistic and a bit of luck.”
Even Kirby Smart knew the Sooners’ turnovers were flukey
The first turnover was a pump-fake fumble with the tight end wide open in the end zone. The next turnover, an interception, came with a wide-open player in the red zone. They could have at least walked away with points there. When Mateer fumbled the ball on the sideline, it was fourth down, so that likely wasn’t going to end in points. But it was a turnover regardless.
Then the Rocky Beers fumble: OU was moving the ball well and could have turned that into points. These things can’t happen. And no one is saying that OU would have won, because they likely wouldn’t have. But the game would have been closer. Three of the four turnovers led to points. In other words, the Sooners helped Georgia score.
Not to mention, the defense was doing their job at that time, too. Georgia QB Gunner Stockton went 4/14 for five yards and an interception. The defense was working, and the offense kept shooting itself in the foot. Kirby Smart is 100% right: the Sooners beat the Sooners.
