Alabama vs. Mississippi State Week 5 preview: Keelon Russell, Kamario Taylor headline college football’s must-see matchup of young stars
Two of college football’s most exciting players will take center stage together on Saturday.
The Alabama—Mississippi State matchup in Week 5 features the two most compelling young stars in college football right now. Through the first four weeks of the season, Kamario Taylor and Keelon Russell have captured the spotlight, and this head-to-head showdown should provide a measuring stick for both signal-callers and their respective offenses.
Kamario Taylor is more than just hype
Taylor has been the story of college football’s early season, and the attention is well deserved. The Mississippi State quarterback has totaled 1,377 total yards with 15 touchdowns through four games. What makes those numbers even more impressive is how he’s put them together.
This is not a young quarterback playing it safe and letting the game come to him. Taylor is willing to take shots all over the field, and the confidence he has in his tools is evident on every snap. His ability to consistently hit deep balls along the sideline makes Mississippi State’s offense nearly impossible to contain.
Taylor is a hometown product who grew up a Mississippi State fan, and the energy surrounding the program reflects it. The fan base is engaged in a way that feels different, rallying behind a player proud to represent the school.
But this isn’t just a feel-good story of a smaller program in the SEC. Taylor legitimately appears to be the most physically gifted athlete in the country, with rare mobility for a larger quarterback and the strongest arm of every starting quarterback in the country.
Keelon Russell has lived up to every ounce of the hype
While Taylor has commanded much of the national conversation, Russell deserves far more attention for what he’s done with the Alabama offense. The former five-star recruit was the player everyone was eagerly awaiting in Kalen DeBoer’s system, and he has certainly lived up to expectations.
Russell has totaled 1,297 yards with 11 total touchdowns so far this season. He’s armed with a deep arsenal of wide receivers, and that combination has helped Alabama sit 19th in the country in EPA per pass. The Crimson Tide defense adds another dimension, capable of producing turnovers at any given moment to flip the game in their favor.
Mississippi State’s secondary could be the deciding factor
As talented as Taylor is, this game could come down to what happens on the other side of the ball for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State’s secondary has been inconsistent through the early portion of the schedule. Against Missouri, they gave up a ton of big plays to Cayden Lee, and the numbers back it up, as Lee totaled 11 catches for 156 yards and two scores. The Bulldogs rank 80th in the country in EPA per dropback allowed.
If Russell can exploit that weakness with his receiving corps, Alabama will have the edge in a game that otherwise features two evenly matched young quarterbacks. Hopefully, both Taylor and Russell put on a show, because college football is better when matchups like this live up to the billing.
