2025 is a very big year for the Auburn Tigers and their head coach Hugh Freeze. If things go wrong, there is a chance we end up seeing Freeze without a job.

His first two season at Auburn were pretty much unacceptable when you look at them through the lens of what the Auburn standard is. Sure, it’s been a while since they’ve last won a National Championship or even the SEC Championship, but the program still expects to compete for those things. And, under Freeze, they haven’t.

2025 is a season where not many people know what the team will be. There aren’t many, if any, that are picking this team to be near the top of the SEC. But, at the same time, not many think they will be the worst team in the SEC. They have an extremely talented roster, and the last few seasons have recruited fairly well.

So, yes, this season is big. Freeze has to make sure he makes all the right decisions in fall camp if he wants to succeed in-season. That starts with the quarterback position.

Tigers fall camp features freshman Deuce Knight making plays

The perceived starter at the quarterback position is Jackson Arnold, the Oklahoma transfer. He played pretty bad there last year, but a lot of that was due to things that weren’t really in his control, like injuries, terrible scheme and play calling, and being forced to play an RPO style that didn’t fit his game that well.

At Auburn, pretty much everyone thinks the experience and being a former five-star quarterback is going to be the thing that makes him a starter. Yes, he’s putting in the work, but we are talking about why he was already perceived as the starter before the work was put in.

So, we’re not really sure if there is a position battle or not, but if true freshman quarterback Deuce Knight has anything to say about it, there could end up being one. And, he’s showing that he’s definitely not going to roll over.

There’s a practice clip making the rounds that shows Knight, the true freshman five-star quarterback, making a more than impressive throw to star wide receiver Eric Singleton. Yes, you could say the ball was overthrown a bit, but had it been under thrown it would have been an interception. In those instances, he’s putting the ball only where Singleton can get it.

It’s a pretty nice play, and it’s one that is going to get the attention of a lot of people. Knight can play, and he’s building chemistry with one of the players he needs to the most.
