Notre Dame football head coach Marcus Freeman provided key injury updates Monday as the Fighting Irish begin preparations for their upcoming matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Following a dominant 49-10 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers, Freeman had news on both ends of the spectrum for the Notre Dame roster.

Luke Talich expected back for North Carolina

The first update was a welcome one. Senior safety Luke Talich will return for the North Carolina game after suffering a hand injury during Notre Dame’s 27-10 victory against Michigan State. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive back was unavailable for the Purdue game.

Going back to the initial report, the actual diagnosis was that Talich broke his thumb, which required surgery.

He was spotted in a cast over the past week, and the latest is that it sounds like he will put a club on that hand for the foreseeable future. That will limit him in some capacity, but it is great to see that this was nothing more than a short-term blip and not a long-term loss for a Notre Dame team already dealing with the injury to star safety Brauntae Johnson, who is also expected back in a couple of weeks.

Expect Talich to be the starting safety opposite senior safety Adon Shuler. True freshman Joey O’Brien, a phenom at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, got the start against Purdue and flashed a ton of ability. Notre Dame should feel very fortunate for that performance, as O’Brien solidifies the depth at the position.

Once Johnson comes back, this once again becomes the deepest safety room in all of college football.

Quincy Porter done for 2026 season

The unfortunate news came on the offensive side of the ball. Sophomore wide receiver Quincy Porter is now done for the 2026 season. Freeman delivered the news that Porter will have season-ending knee surgery.

This is a tough blow for a talented pass catcher who was a five-star recruit in the 2025 recruiting class. Originally signing and playing as a freshman for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Porter had knee surgery this past January. There was some optimism that he would be back at some point this season, but Notre Dame fans will now need to wait to see his return.

The frustration is understandable. There was a lot of optimism when Porter transferred to Notre Dame, given the talent that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound pass catcher brings to the table.

There is a strong argument that when healthy, Porter may be the most talented overall pass catcher on the entire roster. He still has multiple years of eligibility, so this is not the end of his road in South Bend, but it is a major detour for this Notre Dame team.

What it means for the wide receiver room

Luckily, the Fighting Irish have had a huge breakout from junior wideout Micah Gilbert, who currently leads the team with 337 yards receiving and has made a significant impact in the boundary. Along with Jordan Faison, Notre Dame has a dynamic duo that will lead its passing game.

The loss of Porter does make it more necessary for players like Jaden Greathouse, Mylan Graham, or potentially younger options like Jerome Bettis Jr. or Elijah Burress to step up and increase the depth of this wide receiver room. The group is still talented, but the ceiling took a dip with the loss of Porter, who had not been able to suit up for the Fighting Irish so far this season.

It is an unfortunate circumstance, but hopefully Porter is able to recover and regain his footing to begin showcasing the talent that once made him a five-star recruit.
