Notre Dame is coming off a massive official visit weekend. They have been predicted to land a priority defender who was in South Bend.

Notre Dame football just put together a tremendous official visitor weekend for several top targets in the 2027 recruiting class. One of the more interesting visitors in South Bend was Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel linebacker Roman Igwebuike. There was a lot of work to do heading into that trip.

Based on all the early feedback, head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive line coach Brian Jean-Mary, and the Fighting Irish were able to answer all of the questions. Notre Dame is now considered the firm leader, which was also confirmed by Rivals’ recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong. He logged an expert prediction for Igwebuike to land with the Fighting Irish.

After the visit, I also put out an intel piece on this past weekend. Here is what I wrote about Igwebuike and Notre Dame’s push for the Chicago native.

LB Roman Igwebuike – Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel

The Igwebuike recruitment has been a fascinating one to watch. Notre Dame wasn’t in it before Brian Jean-Mary took over as linebackers coach, but they turned up the heat once he was on staff. Things have been trending in a good direction over the last few weeks.

Heading into the weekend, there was still work to do, however. Programs like Clemson, Indiana, and Tennessee have been pushing extremely hard. After this official visit, I don’t think it’s going to matter how hard other teams push. Notre Dame showed Igwebuike and his family everything they needed to see. They are now the firm leader for the 6-3, 225-pound defender. If this recruitment ends sometime soon, it’ll be the Irish.

With the recent buzz surrounding 5-star Kaden Henderson, linebacker recruiting appears to be trending in an elite direction. Jean-Mary has a chance to make a statement down the stretch.

With Notre Dame trending quickly with Igwebuike and 5-star Kaden Henderson, linebacker recruiting has a chance to go through an elite finish. That would be one of the best linebacker duos that the Irish have signed, assuming that they can close. It would also be a great early statement from Jean-Mary on the recruiting trail.

Roman Igwebuike’s recruiting background

Igwebuike is considered a four-star player and a Top-200 recruit by multiple major recruiting platforms right now. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the talented linebacker currently ranks as the No. 137 overall player, the No. 9 linebacker, and the No. 8 player from the state of Illinois for the 2027 recruiting class. Keeping top talent “at home” should always be a top priority for the Irish staff.

A long list of impressive programs has been pursuing him, over 40 of them to be exact. Some of the top offers for the Chicago native include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Miami, USC, Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Nebraska, Arizona State, Arkansas, Louisville, Iowa State, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, NC State, Mississippi State, Maryland, Illinois, Kansas State, Syracuse, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, Washington, West Virginia, Baylor, Kansas, and Purdue, among others.

Leading one of the top programs in high school football, Mount Carmel is loaded with next-level talent. The 6-3, 220-pound linebacker is one of the team’s top overall talents, which is saying something. He has the combination of size, explosiveness, and physicality to become a stellar inside linebacker on the next level. The versatility that Igwebuike brings is extraordinary.
