Former Ohio State 5-star recruit who transferred hit with major injury news that changes his football career

Former Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Quincy Porter’s sophomore season of college football just got some bad news.
Porter will miss the entire 2026 season after Notre Dame announced the former five-star recruit needs season-ending knee surgery. Porter, who spent one season in Columbus before transferring to the Fighting Irish, now faces an uphill climb to get his college football career back on track.
Porter was a five-star recruit in the class of 2025 whom Ohio State landed from New Jersey. He played in five games for the Buckeyes during the 2025 season, catching four passes for 59 yards. It was a small surprise when he decided to leave Ohio State after just one year, with the belief being that he would find more playing time at Notre Dame.
Quincy Porter’s knee injury ends his 2026 before it starts
The unfortunate reality is that Porter will not see a single snap in 2026. He had been dealing with an offseason knee injury that the team hoped he could recover from at some point this year. A flare-up has now caused him to need surgery on that knee, according to Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.
“He’s a great young man that has really done everything right. He’s got another setback, but his mind is in the right place. He’ll be back at some point before we know it,” Freeman said.
Porter is a big 6-foot-4 wide receiver who would not have started for Ohio State this season, but he could have played a depth role for the Buckeyes if he had stuck around. There was a path for him to earn more playing time at Notre Dame, but he now faces a significant challenge. Even when he returns next season, other players will likely be ahead of him on the depth chart.
Fellow former Buckeye wide receiver Mylan Graham, has played in four games for the Fighting Irish so far and has just three catches for 32 yards. The 2026 season is still young, but it appears neither player’s time at Notre Dame has gone how they had hoped to this point.
It’s a tough break for Porter that you never want to see. He won’t be back on the football field until 2027, and time will tell how strong his comeback can be.
