Penn State football lost a key piece of its defensive front on Saturday. After the Nittany Lions’ 27-9 win over the Temple Owls, head coach Matt Campbell revealed that redshirt sophomore defensive end Max Granville will miss the rest of the season.

“Max got injured in practice this week,” head coach Matt Campbell said. “He will be out for the rest of the year. Obviously, a really tough blow for our football team, and really, most importantly, a really tough blow for Max.

“The thing I love about Max is he’s kind of been a pillar of glue for the unity of our football team over the last nine months-who he is, what his character is-and I think that’s why I think we’re all really convicted that he’ll come back better than ever from his injury. It’s a tough loss for us. It was a tough day for us. But Max and his family are certainly in our thoughts and prayers. He will come back better than ever.”

The pass rusher from Sugar Land, Texas, was expected to play a significant role on the defensive line this year. This is a tough loss for a unit still trying to find its footing under a new coaching staff.

Granville’s career has been plagued by injury setbacks

Granville’s time in Happy Valley has been defined more by what he hasn’t been able to do than what he has. As a true freshman, he redshirted and appeared in seven games, recording one pass breakup and one tackle. His redshirt freshman season in 2025 never got off the ground because he missed the entire year due to injury.

This season was supposed to be different. Granville earned a spot on the preseason Comeback Player of the Year watchlist and flashed early. He notched a pass breakup against Marshall before the latest setback ended his campaign. For a young player who has already dealt with so much, this one is a tough pill to swallow.

The Nittany Lions need answers along the defensive edge

Penn State’s defensive line depth is a real concern. This team looks completely different from the group that struggled through a disappointing 2024 season. Matt Campbell brought a wave of former Iowa State players. And while there’s optimism about the direction of the program, there’s also a lot of unknown along the defensive front.

That unknown just got bigger without Granville. In the Big Ten, the trenches matter more than almost anywhere else in college football. The league’s physicality demands a deep, capable defensive line, and Campbell is adjusting from the Big 12, where the emphasis on defensive line play isn’t as pronounced. Losing a player who was supposed to anchor part of that pass rush forces other guys to step up, and fast.

The Nittany Lions handled Temple 27-9, though the Owls gave Penn State a competitive first quarter before the talent gap took over. Now Campbell’s squad turns its attention to Buffalo next week, and the coaching staff will need to find answers along the defensive edge without one of the players it was counting on most.

Maybe Granville comes back next year better than ever. You always hope for that with a young player dealing with repeated injuries. But right now, Penn State has to figure out how to generate pressure without him for the rest of 2026, and that’s a challenge this defense can’t take lightly.
