Washington Commanders defy all odds to make undeniable statement against defending champion Seattle Seahawks

The Washington Commanders beat the Seattle Seahawks, 33-31, in a rain-soaked, slop-filled home opener, and the result should change every conversation about this team heading into Week 4.
No Jayden Daniels, no Sam Cosmi. Backup offensive linemen starting along with rookies on defense. A nor’easter pillaging the East Coast. Washington had every conceivable reason to roll over & lose this football game against the defending champions who just got their starting quarterback back, and they did not.
This team came out firing on all cylinders, and Seattle should have known they were in for a long afternoon by the end of the first quarter.
Marcus Mariota earns his captain’s patch
The Commanders made Marcus Mariota a permanent captain this week, and he responded with one of the gutsiest performances you’ll see from a backup quarterback in 2026.
The read option to ice the game. The third-and-long conversions pulled out of thin air when all momentum was swinging toward Seattle. Mariota didn’t flinch. He was brilliant, and the team rewarded him the right way before the game even started.
That’s a captain’s win.
Sonny Styles looks like a star on defense
Sonny Styles could be a star on defense capable of matching the star power of Daniels.
The rookie linebacker produced a quarterback hit, two passes defended, an interception, and four solo tackles. These hybrid safety-linebacker guys who come into the league typically get misused by defensive coordinators. Too much coverage, too much rushing, stale middle linebacker duties.
None of that is happening with Styles. It feels like a perfect distribution of all three responsibilities, and Washington is maxing the guy out. Is Daronte Jones the first defensive coordinator to figure out the super-athlete defensive player? He might be.
Washington’s defense smothers Seattle’s ground game
Sam Darnold threw for 380 yards and four touchdowns, didn’t get sacked once, and he still lost.
He threw 2 picks. That helps, but the story of the defense was up front. Seattle’s rushing attack mustered just 44 yards. The longest rush of the day was 11 yards.
The Commanders’ ultra-beef format of big bodies in the middle is paying dividends. They’re not getting run all over. Make the other team one-dimensional and you give yourself a better shot. Washington almost doubled up Seattle in rushing with Nick Allegretti at right guard and a makeshift center in Lucas Patrick.
The bigger picture
Rachaad White introduced himself to the fanbase the right way. Eight carries, 35 yards on the ground, and he iced the game on a third-and-nine handoff. Treylon Burks hauled in a big touchdown. Drew Stevens, the rookie kicker who had drawn some criticism, drilled a 57-yarder before the half right down the pipe in a nor’easter. When does that ever happen for this team?
The Leo Chenal injury is concerning and worth monitoring closely. He had started making an impact in the run game and out on the perimeter. Jayden Daniels remains week-to-week.
The schedule was always going to be a nightmare to start. Philadelphia, Dallas, Seattle. That’s a gauntlet. Washington won one game, and look at how alive everything feels.
The Colts are next. The Giants after that. This team could be well in the mix heading into the heart of the season.
