Ohio State has made four additions through the spring transfer portal so far.
The majority of the Buckeyes’ transfer portal additions are coming in the winter. However, the Buckeyes did have a few areas they needed to add to during this spring.
However, Ohio State still hasn’t added to the most important position they need depth this spring and that is on the interior of the defensive line. Following the spring game, head coach Ryan Day admitted it was an area the Buckeyes would look at.
"I think we've got to take a hard look at it," Day said. "I don't think I have the answer right now. But we've got to look at it. It seemed to me like there was just a lot of knockback on the offensive side of the ball here. But then again, I don't want to make any judgments until I watch the film."
Beau Atkinson has been the only defensive line addition this spring and he is going to come off the edge after having 7.5 sacks last season with North Carolina. Back in the winter, the depth on the interior of the defensive line took a hit when Hero Kanu opted to transfer to Texas. Ohio State should be solid with Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston Started. The questions are beyond them and into the depth.
With the expanded College Football Playoff format, depth is as important as ever and Ohio State watched it get tested during 16 games last year. The Buckeyes are currently going into the season with Tywone Malone Jr., Jason Moore, and Will Smith Jr. as the depth on the interior of the defensive line.
There is still plenty of time until the fall rolls around but the Buckeyes need to find a backup run-stopper for the defense and that is no secret.
