Penn State football HC Matt Campbell had an admission after the loss to Wisconsin that only rubs salt in the wound for their next game

The Penn State Nittany Lions will need wide receiver Koby Howard at some point, and that could continue to prove itself if Howard isn’t back against USC.

The Penn State Nittany Lions had many issues in their loss to the Wisconsin Badgers. They blew a 17-point lead at home against a team that’s really not that good. Let’s face it, most knew this Penn State team wasn’t actually the 13th-best in the country. But Saturday showed they’re probably worse than most thought, too.

Quarterback Rocco Becht played terribly. It was one of the worst games of his career. But at the same time, he didn’t have much help. Outside of Chase Sowell, who had six catches for 70 yards, no other receiver did much. The only three players besides him to record a catch were all running backs. The receiver room has to step up, and head coach Matt Campbell made that known.

“We’re gonna have to have more production from the receiver room and from the other players on the offensive side of the ball,” Campbell told reporters after the game. “What it looked like tonight won’t cut it, for sure… I’d be a fool to sit up here and say we didn’t miss Koby [Howard].”

Penn State definitely needs Koby Howard back

Sowell was playing well in the first half. Then, for whatever reason, the Nittany Lions stopped feeding him the ball. Not to mention, none of the other receivers did a good enough job of getting open. And when they were open, as rare as that was, there just wasn’t time to get the ball to them.

Howard is the best receiver on this roster, and it’s not close. They need him back. Sure, his 12 catches for 344 yards and two TDs were against small schools and bad competition. But he’s still an elite receiver who can separate at an elite rate. That’s what they need. And Campbell wasn’t afraid to admit it. Now, the timeline on Howard’s injury still isn’t clear, but they need him badly.
