The Oklahoma Sooners may be done for the 2026 season. Yes, they still have to play the rest of their games, unfortunately. But their effort and performance on Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs were putrid.

They could not get out of their own way on offense. The worst part is, there were a few offensive drives where they showed promise. However, those drives led to turnovers by John Mateer. The Sooners went punt, punt, red zone fumble returned for a touchdown, red zone interception, and a fumble that led to a touchdown on their offensive drives to end the first half.

Brent Venables’ team went into the locker room at the half 28-0. Even though it was bad, there were some good moments. Now, the bad massively outweighed the good. But the Sooners did have some “winners,” you could say. They definitely had some “losers.”

Oklahoma Sooners winners and losers vs Georgia Bulldogs

Winner: Omarion Robinson, DB

The young defensive back was one of the few players in the game who not only didn’t make many, if any, mistakes, but also had a game-changing play if OU was in the game. His interception was huge. Not to mention, he had some big time stops in the run game in the first quarter. Robinson was everywhere on Saturday. Robinson finished with five tackles and the INT.

Winner: Kip Lewis, LB

In his first game back from injury, Lewis was great. He was all over the field. Venables sent him on blitzes several times, and he showed up with pressure. Lewis also had some big-time plays, like the tip on the interception. And he just played his heart out. He’s a player that Oklahoma fans will always love and respect. He showed why on Saturday despite the blowout loss. Lewis finished with a team-high five tackles, half a sack, half a tackle for loss, and the pass deflection.

Winner: Isaiah Sategna, WR

The Sooners are wasting a player as talented as Sategna. He may be college football’s fastest player, and yet he’s being wasted. Even when he gets a touch, it’s not the right touch. And when he’s being schemed for touches, the guys around him aren’t doing well. Sategna had some really nice plays on Saturday and showed up time and time again, even though Georgia knows he’s one of the only playmakers on the squad. He finished with eight catches for 81 yards.

Loser: John Mateer, QB

I’m not sure much needs to be said here. If he hadn’t had the three turnovers, you could make a case that Mateer played decently in parts of this game. He moved the ball well on some of their best offensive drives all season. The only issue is, he would end up turning the ball over. There was the fumble in the red zone that was recovered for a TD. On that play, Washington was wide open in the end zone, but Mateer pump-faked for some odd reason.

Then came the interception, which was severely underthrown. Of course, the final fumble was a play he should have thrown away long ago, but he danced on the sideline with the ball in his hands like a loaf of bread. After that, it kept getting worse. He was never comfortable in the pocket. Everything was bad. Fans called for Whit Newbauer before halftime.

Loser: Ben Arbuckle, QB

Arbuckle started the game well. Those drives he was cooking up were actually amazing. I originally had him as a loser because many fans were going to blame him, even though he didn’t deserve it. I still have it that way, although there are some blunders worth noting. On one drive, 3rd and nine, OU runs a QB draw. The whole play was botched, and the whole drive was botched. And then his offense couldn’t get the play in for some odd reason. They had to burn too many timeouts.

Loser: Offensive line

The run blocking was absolutely terrible all game long. The Sooners could not move the ball up the middle on the ground. And, for some reason, they kept trying it. It was a terrible game for the group all around.

Loser: Lloyd Avant, RB

Avant was terrible in this game. And, sure, the offensive line certainly didn’t help. However, there were a handful of times it felt like he just took the wrong gap/ran into areas where he shouldn’t have. His pass protection wasn’t good either. There’s no burst. There’s indecisiveness. Just a lot of wrong. The Sooners just weren’t good in the backfield at all, but Avant played the most, so he gets this one.

Loser: Oklahoma defense

The Sooners allowed 41 points. The defense had its issues, but it played way better than the score would show. And it’s not all their fault. Georgia also scored a defensive touchdown. Then, there’s the interception that put the defense in a terrible situation. Then the fumble put them in bad field position. They are just going to get a ton of blame here.

Loser: Coaching staff

The staff mismanaged the game so poorly in the first half. They had to burn two timeouts simply to avoid a delay of game. They also made play-calling mistakes. Finally, the staff’s decision not to pull John Mateer was the cherry on top, even at the end of the game when it was out of reach.
